Nearby Green Spaces: Duboce Park

A Gem of a Green Space
Located just a few blocks from Alchemy, Duboce Park is a hidden gem that offers one of San Francisco's most charming and laid-back public spaces.
Surrounded by Edwardian and Victorian homes, it sits directly on the border between Lower Haight and Duboce Triangle, creating a sunny green buffer between the neighborhoods. Because it's located in a shallow valley between hills, this sunny spot is often protected from the city's notorious fog.
With a unique layout that stretches across two full city blocks, it feels much bigger than it is. The city maximizes every square inch of that acreage. Nearly 1.5 acres of it is dedicated strictly to the fenced-in, off-leash dog play area, leaving the rest for the playground, basketball courts, and the "people-only" picnic lawns.
Canine Culture
One of the best dog-watching and off-leash social hubs in the city, the dog park naturally splits into two distinct social zones. The flat, upper section (near Duboce Avenue) is the high-energy hub where fast-paced games of fetch and puppy wrestling take over. The gentler, lower slope toward Scott Street offers a more relaxed space for older dogs to sniff around. There are even custom dual-level waterfountains (one for humans, one at ground-level for dogs).
Owners should note that the park is completely unfenced; with the Muni streetcar tracking right along the open border. Reliable recall is a must.
Every spring, the park hosts DogFest—a massive, beloved neighborhood festival featuring carnival games and a hilariously "corrupt" dog show (where you can bribe the judges for a good cause). It draws thousands of locals to raise funds for nearby McKinley Elementary School.
People-First Spaces
Because the dog scene here is so active, the park famously underwent a major compromise to keep everyone happy. A paved walking path acts as a strict boundary line. To the southeast is the off-leash dog paradise; directly across the path is a half-moon-shaped public lawn strictly designated as "People Only". This is your safe haven for blanket lounging and picnics, completely free of loose dogs. Nearby, you'll also find:
Youth Play Area & Basketball Courts: Tucked behind fencing on the western edge is a modern playground featuring separate structures for toddlers and older kids. Right next to it sits an incredibly popular, high-demand basketball court (often hosting lively pickup half-court games) that seamlessly links to an "adventure" climbing zone with undulating turf mounds, natural boulders, and climbing nets.
The Scott Street Labyrinth: Hidden away at the park’s westernmost boundary along Scott Street is a beautiful, circular stone-paved meditation labyrinth. Built by the local neighborhood association, it offers a peaceful, contemplative space entirely removed from the high-energy chaos of the dog lawn.
The Harvey Milk Recreational Arts Center: Anchoring the far side of the park is this newly renovated historic community centerpiece. Named after the iconic supervisor, it serves as a massive cultural asset for locals, housing a digital arts center, a dance and aerobics studio, and the oldest public photography darkroom in local history. Fun fact: It was a filming site for Gus Van Sant's Oscar-winning biopic, "Milk".
Connected to Transit
Duboce Park also has some most interesting urban transit integration:
The Sunset Tunnel: At the edge of the park, the Muni N-Judah streetcar line rolls right past the grass and plunges directly into the historic Sunset Tunnel. A focal point for local "railfans" and transit historians (Muni nerds), this piece of historic infrastructure has served as a fixture in local photography and lore for a century.
The Wiggle: The park sits right on The Wiggle—SF’s iconic, historic bicycle route that winds from Market Street to Golden Gate Park. This route bypasses the city's steepest hills by following an ancient, flat valley stream bed.
