The Best of Central San Francisco

Perfectly positioned where Hayes Valley meets Lower Haight, Alchemy offers easy access to vibrant neighborhood cafés, indie shops, cultural attractions, and nearby spots like Duboce Triangle and Alamo Square. Our location at 200 Buchanan feels lively but never chaotic—stylish and centrally connected to all the action, yet just a little bit tucked away behind our lush, landscaped courtyards and scenic breezeways.

Hayes Valley

Hayes Valley packs a lot into just a few walkable blocks. Think morning coffee at Ritual, browsing vinyl at RS94109, and dinner at the cozy French bistro Monsieur Benjamin. Design and clothing shops like Bulo and Marine Layer share the street with cult-favorite boutiques like Modern Appealing Clothing and Reliquary. Stop in for flaky pastries at La Boulangerie, an aperitif at Absinthe Brasserie, or browse art books and gifts at Rare Device. Locally loved spots like Suppenküche and Birba round out the food scene with cozy, design-forward vibes. Patricia’s Green, a pocket park with rotating public art and room to linger, gives the area its casual, community vibe. Architecturally, the neighborhood mixes old and new—graceful Victorian walk-ups stand next to striking new builds with glass-and-steel facades, a contrast that reflects Hayes Valley’s blend of heritage and forward design.

Commuting from Hayes Valley

Living at Alchemy at 200 Buchanan puts you in one of the city’s most transit-friendly pockets. You’re just a block from the Market Street corridor, where Muni Metro lines like the J, K, L, M, and N offer quick access to downtown, SoMa, and the Mission. Multiple bus routes—including the 6, 7, 21, and 22—run nearby, making it easy to get across town without a car. For cyclists, the Wiggle—a popular, low-incline bike route—is just a block away, connecting you efficiently to the Castro, Lower Haight, and the Mission. And with BART stations at Civic Center and 16th Street Mission both within biking distance, car-free regional travel is also convenient.

Lower Haight

Just 1–2 blocks north of Alchemy, Lower Haight has a laid-back energy all its own. It’s a bit less gentrified than its neighbors—which many agree is part of the appeal. Start your day with a pour-over at Fool's Errand or Out There Coffee Roasters, flip through zines and comics at Silver Sprocket, and grab a hearty breakfast / brunch / lunch at Kate's Kitchen. It’s a neighborhood where well-known murals line the alleys, the bars pour late, and record stores like Vinyl Dreams keep the turntables spinning. Stop by Fifty24SF Gallery for a rotating lineup of street art and contemporary exhibitions, or dig for vintage finds at shops like Held Over. Grab a banh mi from Cafe International, a cool brew at Woods Lowside, or drinks and pinball at Molotov’s. It’s a walkable, colorful, and original area to enjoy.

Duboce Triangle

Just .3 miles from Alchemy, Duboce Triangle is a small but well-loved slice of the city, nestled between Market Street and the Castro. Mornings might start with a latte from Spike’s Coffee & Teas, followed by a stroll through Duboce Park, where dogs roam off-leash and neighbors catch up in the sun. For a casual bite, Duboce Park Cafe serves up sandwiches and smoothies just steps from the grass.

The Wiggle Bike Route

One of San Francisco’s most iconic bike routes, the Wiggle is a pleasant, zigzagging path that lets cyclists avoid the city's infamous hills while traveling between Market Street and Golden Gate Park. Stretching roughly one mile, it winds through Duboce Triangle, Lower Haight, and the Panhandle. Popular with daily commuters and weekend riders alike, it's a low-stress alternative to steeper routes, with green bike lanes, signage, and plenty of coffee stops along the way.

Alamo Square Park

Alamo Square Park is one of San Francisco’s most recognizable green spaces. Perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the city skyline and beyond, its eastern edge frames the iconic Painted Ladies, the row of Victorian homes often featured in postcards and films. The rest of the park offers mature trees, quiet walking paths, tennis courts, and grassy areas that are perfect for picnics or lounging on blankets. There’s also a fenced, off-leash dog play area.

Arts & Culture

Alchemy's Hayes Valley locale puts you in easy reach of some of San Francisco’s most dynamic arts and cultural experiences. Just a short walk away (about .4 miles), the SFJAZZ Center, San Francisco Symphony, Opera House, and Asian Art Museum anchor the city’s Civic Center arts district. But Hayes Valley itself also has a strong creative pulse. Local galleries like Hashimoto Contemporary showcase emerging and mid-career contemporary artists, while Fouladi Projects blends fine art with design-forward objects and installations. During warmer months, the Urban Air Market brings together independent makers, artists, and designers for an open-air festival that lines the streets with local talent. Smaller events like Hayes Valley Art Works also pop up throughout the year, hosting outdoor exhibitions, community projects, and live art.
